Tire Reef Cleanup Scoping, Broward County FL – 2006

This project built on the experience of past efforts to determine the most viable disposal options for tires that were previously introduced as artificial reef habitat.

Project Abstract

Through this project, NOAA provided support to produce a tire recycling feasibility assessment and report that assisted the State of Florida in determining whether the private sector would accept the tires for recycling and what recycling technologies might be appropriate given the condition of the tires.

The end result was a cohesive plan that integrated support and expertise from the State of FL, Broward County government, and the US Military in a plan to remove, transport and dispose of tires, including reuse and reycyling where possible .  This overall plan was estimated to require $3.5 million to enact in entirety, which would require later evaluation and funding, likely by a cooperative effort.
